How I get started
Hi and welcome to my Etsy Shop “Ruth Sewing Room Design”! I love to sew bright and pretty boutique style dresses, themed outfits and costumes for children. My mind is constantly creating lovely new designs for pageant wear, dress up, photo shoots, special occasions and everyday wear for your little ones. I’m inspired by beautiful fabrics and I love to take a design and put my own spin on it by using colors and patterns to create a themed dress or just something that I know will make a little girl (and her momma) smile! Sewing is my art and it’s been a lifelong love!
I learned to sew from my mother at the tender age of six in Brooklyn, NY. My first project was a blouse; it didn’t turn out too well, but I wasn’t deterred! I kept sewing and learning and at fourteen years old I started my first sewing job, making clothes for my neighbor’s seven year old daughter.
During my teenage years my mother and I worked with different fabrics and patterns, building my skills along the way. I found sewing to be a creative outlet to de-stress and relax. Sewing also helped build my self-esteem and it became an important part of my life forever.
I moved from New York at nineteen and lived in Phoenix, AZ for eighteen years. My lovely daughter Michelle was born and sewing took a backseat while I raised her as a single mom.
In 1995 I moved to Charlotte, NC to start a new life and eventually landed a good job with BellSouth. My daughter finished high school and moved back to Phoenix and I found a new church home. My passion for sewing returned when I began sewing for the church to create biblical costuming for various events.
With the fever burning in me to sew, I attended a conference in Orlando, FL sponsored by Martha Pullen. One of my workshops was “How to Take Your Hobby and Make It Your Business”. Later that year I attended a “Home Sewer Association” meeting in New York City to receive my teaching certification. “Ruth Sewing Academy” was created out of these experiences.
At first I only had a handful of students, but I saw the potential in it and found myself at a cross road in my life. I had to choose between a career and following my heart. In November 2002 I decided to walk away from a lucrative job with benefits to pursue the dream and passion of my life: “SEWING”.
I continued to look for new teaching venues and secured a position as a sewing instructor at Central Piedmont Community College where I still currently teach. At this point I have been sewing for forty-seven years and have been teaching full time for the past ten years.
I opened my Etsy store in 2011 as a way to share my sewing outside of my own local community. I am thankful to say that it has been successful and I have enjoyed making sewing creations for many little ones over the years.
The majority of my items are made to order to ensure a good fit for your child. You can order through the listings or send me a convo if you would like me to make you something completely unique or if you have any questions about an item.
